Better Golfer

BY HUGO DEMAYA / SCRATCH GOLFER

Continuing our series of how to come out of lockdown 3.0 a better golfer, today we are going to help you work on your chipping.

WORK ON YOUR CHIPPING

The best (and safest) way to work on your short game is to set up a chipping net in your garden, garage or even inside. If inside check out our impact balls to avoid any costly accidents.

1 – TARGET HOLE WITH DIFFERENT CLUBS (CHIPPING NET)

The trajectory and speed of chip shots vary depending on the situation. It is easier to play a chip shot with a lower trajectory simply by using a less lofted club. By using different clubs, you are able to hit either a lower or higher chip shot without having to change your technique or shot type.

To get comfortable with the different lofts hit three chips into the net, then change clubs, repeat the process until you have hit 30 balls This drill will add variety to your short game and help you choose the right club when chipping out on to the greens in spring.

2 – THE TOWEL DRILL

The towel drill is a great drill if you want to practice landing your golf ball on your landing spot. A chipping net isn’t required, for this indoor short game drill place a small towel about 5 to 10 yards away from you.

Chip at the towel and try to land the ball onto the towel at least 10 times. The towel drill makes indoor winter golf drills fun while also teaching you new skills in the process.

An example, the towel is the landing zone. You can practice this drill in your garden or inside.

3 – THE COIN DRILL

Had enough of thinning or fatting chips?

A good strike and solid contact is very important in order to hit good chip shots on a regular basis. The coin drill is exactly that, get rid of the golf ball, place a coin on your chipping mat / carpet and try to chip the coin. A coin is very small and it requires a precise strike in order for you to advance the coin.

Put a small coin on top of the grass and try to sweep it off the grass towards the hole, do you think you could do this?
4 – ONE HANDED CHIP SHOT

Being able to control your club face is key if you are serious about improving your short game.

Hitting a good chip shot with only one hand is harder than what it might seem. Being able to control the club face with one hand is difficult, but this drill will improve your awareness of the club face and ultimately it will improve your chipping in general.
